Blood Flow Restriction
Ashland Physical Therapy is now using blood flow restriction training to improve both strength and function in the appropriate patient populations. Matt Pulisic, PT, DPT, OCS is certified in Personalized Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation through the Owens Recovery Science program. Blood flow restriction is used during exercise to improve muscle strength, size, and power in individuals who, for many reasons, find it difficult to lift heavy weight. Through a variety of physiological adaptions that occur during blood flow restriction training significant beneficial changes will be seen. Blood flow restriction training consists of the use of a cuff placed around the upper part of a limb and inflated to an appropriate pressure limiting the flow of blood to the limb while exercising. We use the Delfi pneumatic tourniquet system that applies the appropriate and safe amount of pressure to the limb based on the individual patients personalized limb occlusion pressure.
After appropriate training of the entire physical therapy staff, our therapists have seen a significant improvement in muscle function in all patients using this technique and find it most beneficial in our post-operative population. With hundreds of research studies published, all evidence shows this is a safe and effective treatment modality.
