Matt is a 1987 graduate of Randolph-Macon College with a degree in Biology and in 1990 he graduated from VCU’s School of Physical Therapy at the Medical College of Virginia. In 2002, he received his master’s degree in Orthopedic Physical Therapy, and in 2010 received his Doctorate degree also from the Medical College of Virginia at VCU.

In 1990, he began his physical therapy career at Tuckahoe Physical Therapy, a private practice in the west end, and from 1993-2000 was the clinic director of Tuckahoe Physical Therapy in Ashland. In October of 2000 he opened Richmond Physical Therapy and then in February of 2005 he returned to Ashland opening Ashland Physical Therapy, both outpatient orthopedic and sports physical therapy clinics. In May of 2019 Matt sold his Richmond practice to one of his staff physical therapists, and then solely worked full time running the Ashland location. In the summer of 2022, he sold Ashland Physical Therapy to a regional corporate operation, staying on staff until February of 2023. Throughout his career he has worked closely with Randolph-Macon College athletes, and in the spring of 2023 volunteered in the athletic training room at RMC assisting the athletic trainers with rehabilitation of their athletes. In August of 2024 Matt fully came on board with the sports medicine team at RMC as physical therapist working on campus. He achieved Board Certification in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in 1996. He has conducted research publishing two articles: "Risk Factors for Plantar Fasciitis - A Matched Case-Control Study" in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, May 2003 and "Impact of Demographic and Impairment - Related Variables on Disability Associated with Plantar Fasciitis" in Foot and Ankle International, May 2004. In November 2019 he became certified in Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation, and in January 2023 he became certified in dry needling. He is also a member of the Orthopedic Research of Virginia, Graduate Education Medical Committee assisting in overseeing the function of the sports arthroscopy fellowship program.

Matt specializes in rehabilitation of all orthopedic and sports related injuries with a special interest in the upper and lower extremity biomechanics, post-operative rehabilitation, and orthotic fabrication. He has been clinical assistant professor at the VCU School of Physical Therapy and annually supervises VCU physical therapy students in the clinic. He is presently a member of the RMC Board of Associates, where he served a term as chairman and is also a past member of the RMC Board of Trustees. Matt annually provides internship opportunities for RMC students and has seen several of his students move on to become physical therapists. Matt is married to Jennifer, a pediatric physical therapist, and together they have four grown children and one grandson. Besides volunteer time at RMC, he volunteers at St. Ann’s in Ashland, and he has made many trips to Haiti, assisting in developing, organizing, and teaching in a Haitian physical therapy clinic.
